The entire experience could not have been better or gone more smoothly. I was referred to Byrd Build Design from Smoot Lumber Co., a very reliable company that has been in business in Alexandria for many years. From the excellent Byrd Build Design web site I got contact information and e-mailed my request for an estimate for the work. I had an almost instantaneous personal response---not an automated acknowledgement---from his office. Mike Byrd called later that day and agreed to meet with me the following day to evaluate the work. He gave me options and good practical advice regarding the type of stairs that I should install. He e-mailed his proposal, and when I accepted it, the stairs were ordered promptly. He and his assistant came exactly when they said they would a few days later to install the stairs. The work was accomplished in just under three hours. They left the work area clean and there was no variation from the initial price that he gave me. I have rarely had such a satisfactory repair experience. The entire process was done in about a week's time. This included several days waiting for the stairs to arrive from the manufacturer or distributor. I will call Mike first for any future problems in his area of expertise.

Many contractors do not know how to work on an older home built in 1916. Byrd Design Build did a perfect job on three doors that have been troubling since the purchase of this townhouse. No one even wanted to work on the outside door entrance to the basement that would not shut completely for 22 years. The Byrd contractors measured and installed a perfectly fitting door. What a pleasure to not have the wind blowing open the door and putting out the pilot light! In addition, they installed a beautiful door going down to the lower level that opens and closes beautifully. The back storm door that had to be special ordered and was the last to be completed was another perfect fit. All the work was done in a timely manner. The company estimated the time it would take to order the doors and complete the job. There were no excuses for delays or problems with installation, or hidden costs. Mike did an excellent job finishing the new door so that the stain matched our hardwood floors. Both Mike & his assistant were very courteous and professional the day of installation. Mike Byrd, of Byrd Design, was very helpful from the beginning to the end of the project. He helped us pick what type of door to use (Fiberglass because of heat trapped between the door and our storm door in the summer would not handle wood), ordered the door for us, confirmed that our hardware choice was correct before we purchased it, and then installed the new door and hardware (with one other worker) in about 4 hrs or so.
